This is a photomicrograph of the gingiva (gum between two teeth) of a rat. The brown color identifies cells that secrete a protein called stromal derived factor-1 (SDF-1), which is expressed in the skin. SDF-1 has been demonstrated to play critical roles in stem cell and tumor homing to a number of tissues.
