This is a magnified view of a mouse embryonic eye as it develops into a living camera. In this view, the central lens is surrounded by the photosensitive retina and pigmented epithelium. The optic nerve (grey) collects and transmits visual information to the brain. The nuclei of dividing cells are labeled in brown, as they begin to differentiate into rods, cones, and other specialized cell types.
