This is a picture of the urogenital system of a newborn mouse stained for the GATA-3 protein. The two kidneys (top) are stained to highlight the branching duct system that will transport urine to the bladder (central white structure at the bottom) via the ureters (blue). The adrenal glands (white pearl-like ovals) are located on top of the kidneys. On either side of the bladder in this male mouse are two testes. In humans, mutation in GATA-3 leads to HDR syndrome and abnormal kidneys.
