Processes (axons) from neurons on one side of the spinal cord that cross to the other side allow us to make coordinated bilateral movements, such as walking and running. A fluorescent dye was applied to one side of a chick embryo spinal cord to visualize the axons that crossed the midline. The different colors indicate the depth of these axons and show their overall organization within the spinal cord.
