The bright yellow-green features illustrate structural abnormalities in the inner ear of deaf mice. These animals have a mutation in a gene important for the formation of projections (stereocilia) from the sensory cells in the cochlea. Mutations in this same gene cause deafness and similar structural abnormalities in humans.
