These sea urchin embryos reach out to each other as they swim in search of food. All animals have muscle surrounding their gut to move nutrients through the gastrointestinal tract. Here the glowing muscle fibers that surround each urchin’s esophagus reveal the complex organization that is required to swallow food, even in a simple animal.
