Research in our lab focuses on the formation of germ cells (sperm and ova) using the fruit fly (Drosophila) as a model. This is a picture of the region that forms male germ cells. The cluster of red cells is the “hub” to which the germ cells attach; germ cells mature as they move away from the hub. In this experiment, the hub is misplaced – it should be at the tip of the testis. Some differentiating cells migrating away from the hub are therefore hitting a dead end at the tip rather than heading in the proper direction. Germline cells are stained blue.
